Training for the Future

TAFE the Future of Training

  • Re-establish TAFE as a single brand delivering quality training and education across WA
  • Industry Skills Centres at TAFEs to provide employees, employers and unions a single point of contact around their training needs
  • Revamp the State Training Board and Industry Training Councils to ensure that there is a direct link between industry needs and government economic direction
  • Provide funding to allow apprentices from small craft trades to continue to study in WA

Quality Assurance in Training

  • Undertake an audit of existing Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to ensure compliance and good practice
  • Ensure quality training is delivered by private training providers through an ongoing audit process

Making Training a Priority in Everything We Do

  • Maximise the number of apprenticeships and traineeships created through government contracts by the introduction of Western Australian Industry Participation Plans (WAIPPs)
  • Require a skilled work agreement on all future major resource projects to identify the number and type of apprenticeships and trainee positions that will be created
  • Expand the Priority Start policy to include big maintenance contracts and joint ventures of public private partnerships which involve a construction arrangement
  • Group contracts together to require contractors to meet their obligations and ensure regular enforcement and compliance checks

Regional TAFEs supporting Jobs Growth

  • Ensure the State Priority Occupation list is responsive to the employment needs of the regions and ensure that TAFE training in the regions aligns with job growth
  • Establish a VET Regional Partnerships Program to provide an opportunity for regional TAFEs to invest in new and innovative long term partnerships to create jobs
