Mark McGowan is the 30th Premier of Western Australia. He is committed to keeping WA safe and strong.
Mark was raised in regional New South Wales. His mum was a primary school teacher and his dad a wool classer, teaching him the importance of hard work and compassion. It was these values that led him to sign up to the Royal Australian Navy, training at HMAS Creswell in regional New South Wales.
In 1988, Mark McGowan drove his Corolla hatch across the Nullabor to serve as a Lieutenant at HMAS Stirling on Garden Island.
Mark still lives in Rockingham, where he met his wife Sarah and they are raising their three children – Samuel, Alexander and Amelia.
He and Sarah want their kids to have a strong future in WA. One where everyone can get a good job and has access to high quality healthcare.
Mark McGowan is driven by public service and the desire to give back: to our Navy, to our State and to people in our community.
In 1995, he was awarded a Governor General’s Commendation for Brave Conduct for rescuing an unconscious driver from a burning car. More recently – in 2019 – he helped the family of a 13-year-old Perth boy get to hospital after he stood on a stingray at Preston Beach.
Wanting to give back to his community, Mark McGowan served as a local councillor and Deputy Mayor, before being elected as the State Member for Rockingham in 1996.
He was first elected when Geoff Gallop was leader of WA Labor and Kim Beazley was leader of the Federal Labor Party. He’s learned from the best and has been a safe pair of hands for our State ever since.
Mark McGowan has previously served as a Minister in the Gallop and Carpenter Governments in the portfolios of Education and Training, Environment, Racing and Gaming, Tourism and the South West.
He’s been the leader of WA Labor since 2012 and was elected Premier in 2017.
Since day one of the McGowan Government, WA jobs have been Mark McGowan and WA Labor’s number one priority.
We’re building METRONET, and building the trains locally. We’ve lowered TAFE fees, so more people can get quality training. And we fought for and won our fair share of GST.
By keeping us safe during the pandemic, Mark McGowan and WA Labor also protected jobs and the economy.
And now under Mark McGowan, WA is the only state in Australia with a Budget Surplus, meaning we can invest in WA’s future.
Mark McGowan and WA Labor will keep WA safe and strong.
